Been thinking about what Gambino has been saying in interviews about not wanting people to perceive him or categorize him as a rapper, because being categorized as a rapper and accepting that label means accepting the frameworks and limitations society instils (wrongful or otherwise ) on rappers. The how many rappers do you see getting their own TV show (Atlanta) conversations he’s been stirring up is interesting to me and seems incredibly relevant. (Kanye’s argument for “new slaves / classism” also ties into this)
I kind of feel the same way about comics . I meet people and they introduce me to whoever I’m being introduced to in the almost lowest common denominator form of “this is curt he writes comics” and well I don’t feel like that’s necessary a bad thing , I do sort of feel like the moment I accept that terminology , I accept the baggage associated with it . I don’t think you can define who I am as a person/ artist in a sentence that simple.
How many comic writers do you see making music , making albums , selling screenplays, engaging in other art forms successfully. I don’t want to accept your terminology , because I don’t accept your limitations. I don’t want to accept your frameworks.
what Donald is saying here is “Donald glover can be whoever he wants to be “
What I am saying is “I can be whoever I want to be “
what I’m also saying : you can be whoever you want to be.
I’m more than comics — but I’m also comics. I think If I want to be anything , I need to say that.
"Hi this is Curt.He is a human" seems like a nice introduction.
“That said, Koenig is firmly in favor of selfies. “I’m definitely pro-selfie,” he says. “I think that anybody who’s anti-selfie is really just a hater. Because, truthfully, why shouldn’t people take pictures of themselves? When I’m on Instagram and I see that somebody took a picture of themselves, I’m like, ‘Thank you.’ I don’t need to see a picture of the sky, the trees, plants. There’s only one you.”—
Yo! Issue Four should be out in January . We’re making sure it’ll be worth the wait . I think it’s weirder/ more beautiful than anything we’ve put out so far, but I’m biased. I’ll upload a preview page in a bit.
You've got a bunch of rad under your belt, with more on the way... but what's the next professional "milestone" you're hunting? Is it a publisher? A number sold? Something more personal?
Interesting question . One that I think about a lot , because honestly reconciling ideas such as this is pretty essential to being happy I think . This answer might change depending on some pending things , but when I really get down to it the next milestone I’m hunting is a simple one : Having my stories more accessible to potential readers . This sort of naturally means , I guess, working with bigger publishers.
Other things I’d like to do : write a book at image ( although I’m more interested in letting this happen than getting frustrated chasing after it , like I see some others doing ). It would be fun to do a book at Vertigo because that is a imprint that has meant a lot to me in my life . And writing some other things for money would be swell.
Generally though , it’s sort about the journey and not the destination. Because thinking about the later too profusely can drive people mad.
Anne Morra: Your brother Roman has directed a number of music videos for Phoenix, for which your husband Thomas Mars is the lead singer. Why are you now directing the video for the new song “Chloroform”?
Sofia Coppola: I’ve always loved Phoenix, and the videos Roman did for them. I love the…
